We went there on an open day. Animals are taken good care of, but on that particular day it was very overwhelming for people and animals. A good experience overall, and it seemed that they have a very good system of care and adoption

If you’re looking to adopt a new furry (or feathery) friend and support a great cause, I highly recommend visiting this animal shelter in Berlin. The architecture is quite impressive – it’s both functional and interesting. The high ceilings, natural lighting, and open spaces create a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for animals and humans alike.

Some dogs are allegedly kidnapped there, It:s like a prison , no option to be adopted, that’s cruel and unfair. Some people working there should be in a cage. Really sad. Do not give money to this people, they don’t care that much about animals..

A huge, organized and very friendly animal shelter operated by animal lovers. All cats, dogs, bunnies and even pigs have their own space with indoor and outdoor area. And the staff speak super good English and explain patiently what the adoption process is. Will for sure come back to check out the dogs 🙂

I was quite impressed… I had bad experiences with shelters but this one is well organised and professional. The animals are well taken care of. Plus the staff seemed very cheerful and they were very helpful. The premises are impressive too, raw concrete buildings, which seem purpose built. It’s worth a visit.

Really incredible place. I’ve never seen an animal shelter so large, well-run, organized and clean. There are multiple group houses for the dogs, and there are wonderful fields and orchards all around where the dogs go for walks with volunteers or people interested in adopting them. The adoption process is thorough and the staff are highly trained. Every animal gets veterinary treatment for free for life for all conditions found once they are admitted to the Tierheim. It’s a truly incredible place, thank you for the good life you give these deserving animals

In March of 2022, my fiancé and I were in search of adopting a cat. Before we got here, we were rejected from three other adoption centers. The staff here were very kind and helpful. At first we didn’t find a cat here that seemed like a good fit, then we went into another room and met our lovely boy. He jumped up next to us immediately showing us love, and we knew he was the one. His name was Sylvester, now named Lance. He is such a huge part of our lives and is the sweetest and kindest cat I’ve ever met. I am so thankful we ended up coming to this adoption center and endured such a lovely experience with the staff.

Adopted an adult cat with zero medical records. They said to bring to a vet and they would pay the costs. I called to ask a few days later when and how they would pay me no one responded even the direct phone number of Jazz. I called main number and pressed for manager and get mailbox full as every other extension. This cat of two months has sprayed/urinated throughout my house. I’ve tried what I could afford. Spray detergent, UTI medication etc. I feel they scammed me with taking this cat knowing what it would do since they said it’s Bern’s there awhile and found a home and was brought back again when I asked why they said they didn’t know. Very ODD zero background information when I asked. I, unfortunately, need to surrender this very nice cat but can’t have my brand new home and furniture destroyed and even tried to call to see how I do this and still zero response. THE WORST! Never again!!

After $180 and a phone call 1 week later; My dog was sheltered at this place the same day my dog ran off. I called and posted a missing Dog announcement with pictures on this shelter’s website. I am grateful for getting him back but I feel like I was hustled out of my money.

The kitten we adopted in April had ringworm and we are still battling the ringworm mid July. If you have young children, elderly, or immune compromised family members I would not recommend adopting from this shelter. We love our kitten dearly and are trying our best still to treat him. It has been much more expensive than anticipated, we are easily over $1,000 in bills between our treatments, the kitten’s treatments, and the cost to replace items that are not washable and to continue the deep cleaning in the home for 3 months and counting. The shelter knew about the ringworm and failed to contact folks that had recently adopted pets. We would have appreciated a heads up upon discovery of the outbreak at the shelter so we could have quarantined the kitten much sooner and kept an eye out for infection.

It’s great that it’s a resource that exists at all, but it seems quite poorly organised.

They give such priority to letting apparently disabled clients just cut in the front of the line to the point that no people standing in the regular line who made the effort to show up early are allowed in at ALL for 30-45 minutes at a time! Today I was given a token putting me in the range of the 30-40 something people to arrive in line and it took over *5 hours* to make it to the front and inside because they just kept immediately letting waves and waves of disabled clients & new registrants ahead of everyone else. Sorry, but there are ways to organise this to still prioritise the disabled that don’t outright discriminate against and mistreat everyone else. They could take an example from for instance how some of the Tafeln for humans are organised to respect people’s time, nevermind what the stress of this endless waiting and crowds does to the well-being of the pets themselves who are forced to be there!

Additionally the ladies who give out accessories are quite needlessly hostile, judgemental and seem to reflexively assume the absolute worst of clients. I asked if they had a jogging leash since I am pregnant and knowing how my anxious dog likes to move around, once I give birth a regular leash could likely end up tangled around the stroller and even causing an accident if it’s not attached to and able to rotate around *me*. They acted like this was some exotic and unreasonable ask for a contraption that I see throughout the city all the time, but anyway didn’t have one which I of course understood. Then I saw and was excited that they had the only brand of flea and tick collar that I’ve tried that is *actually* effective against the critters that my dog’s long fur attracts en masse in the area we live (sometimes I picked up to 30 ticks a day off him) since I am traumatised and distrustful of the kind of preventative that cannot be removed, since losing one dog to a seizure and having had one dog develop epilepsy thanks to them. First the lady tried to offer me a *calming collar* which is not a preventative at all, and when I tried to specify if I could take the specific collar that I saw in their bin, the lady with the colorful hair came back from her break and started trying to tell me that all flea & tick preventatives are the same (they are objectively not and have different active ingredients & efficacy!), and then made ignorant and wrong assumptions about my dog’s size to seemingly find any arbitrary excuse to withhold the one from me that I pointed out and would have otherwise saved up to buy anyway since THEY ARE NOT ALL THE BLOODY SAME.

Lady, after standing around waiting for 5 hours I wasn’t in a good mood either, but I didn’t bite your head off for no reason, was not in any way the entitled unreasonable person you unfairly treated me as for first asking about something you didn’t have and being totally accepting of that fact before asking for something specific that I saw you definitely had, which I have perfectly legitimate reasons for requesting which maybe you could have understood if you had bothered to engage with the slightest modicum of compassion and curiosity instead of needlessly nasty ignorant ASSumptions.

I honestly think I would rather go hungry or even beg on the street to afford my dog’s food than subject myself to this treatment in the future.

Mein Herz schmerzt.

I cannot recommend Daisy Family Rescue enough. From start to finish they were so amazing, super communicative and it was clear from the start how much care and love for the dogs they had. We mainly communicated with Lena but all staff were so friendly and accommodating. Lena was SO helpful and really took time to talk with us, making sure everything was the best for the dog but we were also set up as best and confidently as possible. From the moment we contacted Daisy Family Rescue they were professional, very quick to reply and very communicative particularly when our baby was on her journey to us in Berlin! Taking care of the journey, jabs, medication, passport ect, all went through incredibly smoothly. The dogs were looked after so well and we could not be happier to have rescued through Daisy Family Rescue and we will support them forever more! We are so in love and our blonde pup completed our family perfectly. Thank you so much to everyone at Daisy Family Rescue.

My mother adopted Casper today , after I shared his Petfinder profile with her about a week ago .
She lost her cat cloudpaw from a long term illness years ago and it broke her heart he was her soul pet

She was starting to warm up to idea of a new cat , and had done meet and greets at cat cafes etc but it was never right .
I sent mom Casper’s photo and she fell in love . She did online app and set up appointment and he came home . He acted like he had lived with mom forever and is exploring her house and already snuggling and acting like he owns the place , I came by with my husband to meet him and he came right up to us for pets. I think he healed a broken peice of my moms heart . Thank you Berlin animal control. Casper will be forever loved and you couldn’t have picked a better home for such a special cat.

Found a lost dog with a collar and no tags on a Saturday afternoon. Was told by BPD that I could either hold on to the dog till the following Monday or let the dog go. BAC came out to meet me in less than an hour. By the time she pulled up, I received a phone call from BPD that the owner had been found. The officer from BAC was so sweet and so understanding. She came all the way out for nothing, essentially, and still had an awesome attitude about it. Just felt like that should be publicly noted.

Who wrote these reviews? Friends or relatives of Jan? She should be fired. She is rude, unprofessional, a liar, and untrustworthy. Whoever hired this woman must have been desperate

We waited for someone to show up, after being told they would be there in a couple minutes… just for the girl to tell us that she won’t show us the dogs and to come back tomorrow. I guess adopting dogs out isn’t really what they’re there for. Disappointing to say the least.

Pet adoption centers in Berlin provide a range of pet adoption programs designed to connect potential pet owners with companion animals in need of a home. These programs often include various types of pets such as dogs, cats, and sometimes even small animals and reptiles, ensuring wide options for adopters.

    Pre-Adoption Counseling

Before making a commitment, many pet adoption centers offer pre-adoption counseling sessions. These consultations help prospective pet owners assess their readiness for pet ownership by discussing factors like lifestyle, pet care responsibilities, and the specific needs of different animals.

    Behavioral Assessments

Many centers conduct behavioral assessments on their animals to ensure a good match between the pet and the potential owner. This process involves evaluating the pet’s temperament, socialization skills, and energy level, which can significantly impact the adoption experience.

    Microchipping Services

As part of the adoption process, pet adoption centers often provide microchipping services to help safeguard pets against loss. Microchips are a permanent and reliable means of identification that allow lost pets to be quickly reunited with their owners.

    Vaccination and Health Checkups

Adopted pets typically receive a vaccination and health checkup before going to their new homes. This ensures that the animal is healthy and up-to-date on essential vaccinations, providing peace of mind to new pet owners.

For individuals unable to adopt, pet adoption centers frequently provide volunteer and fostering opportunities. Volunteers may assist in various tasks such as animal care, socialization, and event organization, while fostering programs allow individuals to provide temporary homes for pets awaiting adoption.

Frequently asked questions about pet adoption centers in Berlin

What types of pets can be adopted from centers in Berlin?

Pet adoption centers in Berlin typically offer a variety of pets, including dogs, cats, and sometimes small animals such as rabbits, guinea pigs, and hamsters. Many centers focus on rescuing stray or abandoned animals, providing them a chance for a new home. Availability varies, so it's best to check with specific centers for the current selection.

How does the adoption process work?

The adoption process usually involves several steps. First, potential adopters are required to fill out an application form detailing their living situation, experience with pets, and preferences. After the application is reviewed, a home visit may be conducted to ensure a suitable environment for the pet. Finally, if approved, adopters will complete an adoption agreement and pay any applicable fees.

What are the fees associated with pet adoption?

Adoption fees can vary widely depending on the center and the type of pet. Typical fees may range from 50 to 200 euros for cats and dogs, which often include vaccination, microchipping, and sometimes spaying or neutering. These fees help support the shelter's operations and care for the animals.

Are there any requirements to adopt a pet?

Yes, there are generally several requirements to adopt a pet from a center in Berlin. Adopters usually need to be at least 18 years old, demonstrate a stable living situation, and sometimes prove their ability to financially support a pet. Depending on the type of animal, centers may also require a fenced yard or restrictions regarding the presence of other pets.

Can I adopt a pet if I live in a rental property?

Adopting a pet while living in a rental property is possible, but it often depends on the terms of your lease. It's crucial to check your rental agreement and obtain approval from your landlord before proceeding with adoption. Many pet adoption centers will ask for proof of permission during the application process.

What should I prepare for before adopting a pet?

Before adopting a pet, it’s essential to prepare your home and lifestyle. Consider creating a safe environment by removing potential hazards, purchasing necessary supplies such as a bed, food and water bowls, and toys, and researching the specific needs of the type of pet you wish to adopt. Additionally, think about your daily routine and how a pet will fit into it.

What should I expect during the initial adjustment period?

The initial adjustment period after bringing a new pet home can vary but typically lasts a few days to weeks. Pets may experience stress or confusion in their new environment. It’s important to provide a calm space, maintain a consistent routine, and allow the pet time to adjust. Watch for signs of anxiety and consult with the adoption center if needed.

Are there support services for new pet owners?

Many pet adoption centers in Berlin offer support services for new pet owners. These can include training classes, behavioral advice, and ongoing support via phone or in-person consultations. Some centers may also provide resources for veterinary care or community programs that help with pet supplies.

Can I return a pet if it doesn’t work out?

Most adoption centers have policies regarding the return of pets if the adoption does not work out. While the goal is for every pet to find a permanent home, unexpected circumstances do arise. It's essential to discuss the return policy during the adoption process and understand any requirements or conditions that apply.

What impact does adopting a pet have on the community?

Adopting a pet has a positive impact on the community by reducing the number of stray and abandoned animals, ultimately contributing to lower euthanasia rates in shelters. It promotes responsible pet ownership and awareness of animal welfare issues. Each adoption also makes room in shelters for more pets in need of care and homes.
